Accessibility
Last updated: March 2026
Hipe is committed to making our platform accessible to everyone, including people with disabilities. We believe that access to news and information is a fundamental right, and we work continuously to remove barriers that might prevent anyone from using our platform fully.
Our Commitment
We strive to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at the AA level. These guidelines, published by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), provide a set of recommendations for making web content more accessible to people with a wide range of disabilities, including visual, auditory, motor, and cognitive impairments.
Accessibility Features
Hipe includes the following accessibility features throughout the platform:
- Keyboard Navigation β All interactive elements, including navigation menus, article links, buttons, and forms, are fully accessible via keyboard. You can navigate the entire platform using Tab, Enter, Escape, and arrow keys without needing a mouse.
- Screen Reader Support β We use ARIA landmarks, roles, and labels throughout the platform to ensure screen readers can accurately interpret and announce page structure, interactive elements, and dynamic content updates.
- High Contrast Dark Theme β Our dark theme is designed with sufficient color contrast ratios to meet WCAG AA standards. Text, icons, and interactive elements maintain clear visibility against background colors in both light and dark modes.
- Resizable Text β All text on Hipe is set using relative units and responds to browser zoom and text size settings. You can increase text size up to 200% without loss of content or functionality.
- Semantic HTML β We use proper semantic HTML elements such as headings, lists, navigation landmarks, and form labels to provide a clear and logical document structure that assistive technologies can interpret correctly.
- Focus Indicators β Visible focus indicators are displayed on all interactive elements when navigating by keyboard, making it clear which element is currently selected.
- Alt Text for Images β All meaningful images include descriptive alternative text. Decorative images are marked appropriately so screen readers can skip them.
Known Issues
We are actively working to address the following known accessibility issues:
- Some older embedded content from third-party sources may not fully meet our accessibility standards. We are working with content providers to improve this.
- Live chat notifications may not always be announced by all screen readers. We are implementing improved ARIA live regions to address this.
- Certain complex data visualizations in analytics dashboards are being updated with text-based alternatives.
We are committed to resolving these issues and continuously improving the accessibility of our platform.
Testing
We regularly test Hipe for accessibility using a combination of automated tools, manual keyboard and screen reader testing, and feedback from users with disabilities. Our testing includes popular screen readers such as NVDA, JAWS, and VoiceOver, as well as browser-based accessibility auditing tools.
